Aegean Airlines to launch non-stop flights between India and Greece with new Airbus A321XLR aircraft in 2023.
Non-stop flights between India and Greece will begin next March, with Aegean Airlines advancing its launch plans.
The Greek airline announced the induction of two Airbus A321XLR aircraft in December and January next year, enabling the start of new services.
On Wednesday, the airline said it will commence five weekly flights to Delhi from next March and three weekly flights to Mumbai from next May.
The Airbus A321XLR aircraft, which entered into service globally last November, is enabling airlines to open new long haul routes, Aegean’s plans to launch the new flights come amid the strengthening of relations between India and Greece.
In 2023 the two countries elevated the ties to a strategic partnership with focus on economic, defence and maritime sectors. This includes enhanced connectivity through the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor.
Incidentally, IndiGo too has indicated plans to start flights to Athens with A321XLR aircraft but no date has been announced.
Aegean chairman Eftichios Vassilakis said the addition of the two A321neo XLR aircraft with special configuration will accelerate the airline’s access to the extremely important Indian market.
“This allows for the immediate upgrade of our product and services to destinations outside the European Union, longer than 4 hours, in which we already operate,” he added.
Over 90,000 passengers flew between India and Greece in FY 2025 via hubs in West Asia or Istanbul. Interest for travel to Greece has been growing with Greek travel firms and luxury resorts such as Costa Navarino conducting roadshows in India.
“India is a market we deeply respect, and we are excited about the potential for meaningful collaboration and growth,” said Evgenios Dendrinos, managing director of TEMES., the developer of Costa Navarino.
Travel industry sources however point out that bookings to Greece are not seeing the desired uptick. “Visa issues are a concern,” an executive said, referring to processing delays.
