DOJ Still Wants Sundar Pichai-Led Google To Sell Chrome And Tweak Android Business Model; Company Reacts
In August 2024, search engine giant Google lost an antitrust lawsuit from the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) that ruled that stated “Google is a monopolist.” Judge Amit Meta quipped, “And it has acted as one to maintain its monopoly.”
The Sundar Pichai-led company pays rival Apple a staggering $20 billion annually to keep itself as the default search engine. The DOJ later directed Google to chop off Chrome and sell off as a remedial measure. Google Chrome currently dominates the market with near 90 percent market share in the search engine market share globally. The number exceeds 90% if mobile devices are solely accounted for. Doubling down on its previous decree, the DOJ is persuading Google to sell off its most popular browser. In a revised proposal filed by federal judge Amit Mehta, the DOJ remarked, “Google must divest the Chrome browser… to provide an opportunity for a new rival to operate a significant gateway to search the internet.”

In the latest filing, the DOJ labeled the Alphabet subsidiary “an economic goliath that has denied users of a basic American value—the ability to choose in the marketplace.”
Per the Verge, a Google spokesperson stated that the revised DOJ proposal is “miles beyond the Court’s decision and would harm America’s consumers, economy and national security.”
