How Does the Resistance on a Reformer Pilates Machine Work?

Resistance on a Reformer Pilates Machine Work

With its moving carriage, spring-based resistance, and movable platforms, the Reformer sets itself apart from other strength-training equipment. It allows the user to simultaneously stretch and strengthen all of the muscles of the body, creating a balanced physique without overtraining one or more muscle groups. The Reformer demands precise, controlled movement and enhances proprioception (the body’s ability to sense its position in space).2

Unlike best reformer pilates machine where the amount of resistance remains constant throughout the course of a movement, the resistance on a reformer varies. This enables the Pilates instructor to create different levels of resistance for each exercise and for each individual client based on their weight.

There are a variety of ways to adjust the springs on a Reformer. There are shoulder blocks that keep the practitioner from sliding off of the end of the Reformer; a foot bar that can be used by the feet or hands to move the carriage; and long straps with handles attached to the top of the frame.

Incorporating all of these tools and pieces of equipment allows the instructor to customize resistance for each student, creating a more challenging or easier workout. In a class setting, the instructor will usually call out any changes in springs or addition or removal of tools so that the students don’t have to guess about how much they should use during their workout.

Another way the instructor adjusts the resistance of a reformer is by adding or subtracting cords. These are long cords that can be hooked into the springs on the foot bar or on the long straps at the top of the frame. Cords add tension to the exercises and can increase the difficulty of movements like the Leg Lowers or Kneeling Arms in Straps series. When used correctly, the cords will also help a student build strength and control during their workout.

Although some Pilates instructors may prefer to have their students add or remove the cords as a part of their routine, not all teachers will follow this protocol. Using the cords correctly will help a student gain strength and endurance during their workout while avoiding injury. Incorrect use of the cords can result in injuries, such as torn muscles, a common issue with reformer exercises performed by novice or casual practitioners.

Choosing the right springs for a Pilates Reformer is important, as each person will have their own unique body size and weight. In addition to the springs themselves, a good quality Reformer will have a smooth operation that will facilitate fluid and efficient movements. It will have sturdy and dependable handles and straps that can be used for a wide range of exercises, including the Jumpboard, which can be added to many reformers to boost cardio and add additional strength-training exercises.

It’s important to remember that while resistance on a reformer is variable, it is still not the same as resistance training in which more is always harder. The springs on a Pilates Reformer vary in their amount of tension during the movement, which is why it’s so important to work with a certified Pilates instructor when learning how to use the machine.
