IIT Roorkee Addresses GATE Candidates As ‘Dear Idli Chutney No Sambhar’ In Admit Card; The Internet Is In Splits
Email to several (allegedly South Indian) candidates from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee for the 2025 Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) has confounded the applicants and the netizens alike. A racist reference or a technical glitch? But addressing candidates as ‘Dear Idli Chutney no Sambhar’ is lacking humor, if any. Two GATE candidates posted screenshots of their admit card mail on Reddit. One candidate wrote, “Obviously I did not give this name.” “Is this intentional?” another candidate asked. Meanwhile, per Hindustan Times, IIT Roorkee blamed the ‘Idli Chutney Sambhar’ goof up on a technical glitch. Per HT, the institution later sent the candidates with revised and corrected GATE 2025 admit cards.

Meanwhile, the Internet reacted to the GATE admit card, referring to candidates as ‘Idli Chutney and no Shambar.’ “IIT Roorkee became IIT Rookie,” jibed one, while another user wrote, “Someone ordered Idli and had too much of it.”
The GATE exam is held for undergraduate students pursuing courses such as Master of Engineering (ME) and Master of Technology (MTech) or direct PhD. The entrance is held for 30 disciplines, including aerospace engineering, mathematics, biomedical, biotechnology, chemical engineering, electrical engineering, marine engineering, among others. The GATE is conducted by the Indian Institute of Science (IIS), along with the seven IITs, including Roorkee, Delhi, Madras, Bomba, Kharjgpour, Kanpur, and Guwahati. The 3-hour annual exam was first introduced in 1983. There’s no age limit to appear for GATE.
