Established by an executive order on January 20, 2025, by second-time US President Donald Trump, the Department of Government Efficiency aka DOGE was helmed by Elon Musk.

The richest billionaire was designated as a special government employee for the volunteer task which was anyways scheduled to end by the end of this month. DOGE was brought into existence in a bid to plug in the departmental bleed in the federal government and maximize productivity and efficiency. Initially the Republican presidential hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy was roped in to lead DOGE alongside Musk, however he was soon sidelined.

Musk’s tenure as the DOGE chief was tumultuous at best, criticized for interfering with how the government employees operated, and axing the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), causing massive layoffs and disruption.

Rumours (unsubstantiated of course) were abuzz about the growing dislike of Musk within the Trump circle. Add to that the investors’ exasperation over Musk’s absence as Tesla CEO, while the EV giant’s shares and valuation plummeted. Exit from the DOGE didn’t come without rattling the Trump administration. In his latest CBS interview Musk remarked on Trump’s ambitious ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ stating

I think a bill can be big or it could be beautiful. It cannot be both.”

Further he penned a note on his DOGE exit on X/Twitter.

As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President Donald Trump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending.

He added,

The DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government.

While half the followers thanked Musk for his tenure at DOGE, the rest seemed relieved at the exit. “Thank you so much for resigning,” jibed one, while another quipped, “Thank you Elon for jumping into the fire.”
