Nothing Phone 3 Leak Reveals Extended Software Support And Big Performance Gains

A recent leak, paired with official comments from Nothing’s leadership, may have given us a promising glimpse into the software longevity of the company’s upcoming flagship, the Nothing Phone 3. While most eyes have been on the recent teaser of the Phone 3’s chipset, a more subtle but impactful reveal emerged regarding how long the device will be supported.

According to Nothing co-founder Akis Evangelidis, the Phone 3 is expected to offer an impressive five years of Android OS updates and seven years of security patches. This represents a major upgrade in commitment compared to its predecessor, the Phone 2, which promised only three years of OS updates and four years of security support. The extended Android upgrade window could take users well into 2030, adding long-term value to the Phone 3 for those who prefer to hold on to their phones for several years.

However, some questions remain about the frequency of those updates. The Phone 2 received security patches every two months, and the recently launched Phone 3a series follows the same pattern. Given that the Phone 3 is positioned as a true flagship, a monthly security update cycle would be ideal, though it’s still uncertain if Nothing will make that leap.

Beyond software, Nothing is also pushing the hardware envelope. Just days ago, the company confirmed that the Phone 3 will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 chipset. CEO Carl Pei expanded on this in a YouTube video, saying that the chip was chosen for its ability to offer a “balanced experience”, a blend of power efficiency, AI capabilities, and strong overall performance.

Nothing claims the chip delivers an 88% increase in GPU power, a 33% boost in CPU speed, and a massive 125% enhancement in NPU performance compared to the previous generation. Pei added that users can expect a much more responsive and “snappier” experience when using the Phone 3, especially in demanding tasks and camera operations.

Speaking of design, another notable shift is coming. Leaks suggest that the Glyph interface, Nothing’s signature LED lighting system, is being replaced by a dot-matrix setup, signaling a design evolution rather than repetition. This move could reflect a broader shift toward a more mature, refined aesthetic.

The Nothing Phone 3, alongside the Headphone 1, is slated to launch on July 1 in London. With upgraded performance, long-term software support, and a fresh new design approach, Nothing appears ready to take its flagship ambitions to the next level.
