During Jack Altman’s podcast, brother Sam Altman, the co-founder of OpenAI floated the idea of new hardware for running the marvel of AI technologies. He quipped, “current computers were designed for a world without AI.”
While lauding the advent of computers with input units like keyboard etc and the modern touch interface devices, Altman remarked, “These computers have constraints of not having AI.” He further added, “If you have this incredible technology (AI) you can maybe get closer to the kind of technology that exists.” He envisioned AI systems integrated to be more contextually aware of users which goes beyond the traditional UI and UX.
This statement is in stark contrast to his stance from the previous year where Sam Altman seemed confident that AI will not need new hardware. The claim is in line with several other domain experts and industry leaders who are prospecting over a new generation of devices to run AI agents.
Earlier the Sam Altman company made a $6.5 billion acquisition of former Apple design head Jony Ive’s AI device startup. The endeavor ran into some trouble with a trademark infringement lawsuit slapped by Google X spinoff iYO working on another AI device. However, the project will move ahead regardless of the lawsuit, even as rival startups and tech giants are building hosts of devices and tech to enable more AI-enabled services.
