WhatsApp has begun rolling out its voice message transcription feature in India, allowing users to read voice messages without having to listen to them. Initially announced in November 2024, the feature is now available for Android users, with iOS support coming soon. This update is particularly helpful in noisy environments or when multitasking, improving user convenience.

The transcription process is handled entirely on the device, ensuring privacy and security. Both the voice message and its text transcript remain private, as WhatsApp doesn’t have access to the content. The on-device processing ensures that all data stays locally on the user’s device.

The feature currently supports voice message transcription in several languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Russian. However, official support for Hindi is not yet available, though the app occasionally displays text transcripts for Hindi voice messages. This is expected to change as WhatsApp refines the feature and expands language options to serve a broader audience.
To activate the voice message transcription feature, users can go to the WhatsApp settings menu, select “Chats,” and scroll to the “Voice Message Transcripts” section to enable it. They can then choose their preferred transcription language from options like English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Russian, with setup available via mobile data or Wi-Fi.

Once activated, users can transcribe voice messages by tapping and holding the message, selecting “More Options,” and then choosing “Transcribe.” The text version of the voice message will appear next to the audio in the chat, making it easier to follow important conversations without needing to listen to every voice note.
WhatsApp is reportedly testing UPI Lite, a new feature aimed at making small, frequent transactions faster and more convenient. This development could position WhatsApp as a stronger competitor to established payment apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm, particularly in India’s growing digital payments market.
